I had the honor to serve President Trump as the 10th Secretary of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. My journey to the Trump cabinet began thirty years ago after leaving Fayetteville to join the office of a Tarheel giant-Senator Jesse Helms. When I began my career with Senator Helms, one of your Catawba County neighbors-Angela Henson-was right there with me.
I have had the privilege of knowing Angela since she left Carolina, and in a political life that includes senior positions at the Pentagon and the National Security Council, I have never had a colleague more dedicated or committed to the causes that Jesse Helms and Donald Trump championed.
In Senator Helms' office, Angela was the voice for Tarheels from all walks of life. No citizen's concern was too small for her attention-her integrity and compassion were integral to the reputation the Helms' office had for the best constituent services in the entire Congress.
What Angela did for our great Senator, she will do for her friends as Catawba County's Register of Deeds. No one can combine service at the highest federal level with a lifelong background in conservative activism and human resource and financial management. Moreover, Angela is an uncommonly congenial person who lives the right values every day.
